Resilient Living #4: Grounded in the Chaos
June 2026
It’s been a few months since I wrote about taking myself back—about slowing down, breathing, and creating space to come home to myself again.
And life didn’t exactly respond by calming down.
If anything… it ramped up.
We’re in full busy season—running four marinas, a restaurant, a campground, and a boat repair shop. It’s the kind of pace that doesn’t let up. The kind where every day blends into the next, and everything feels urgent.
At the same time, life hit us personally too.
My mother-in-law is in the middle of a battle with kidney cancer and preparing for a major surgery next week to remove her kidney.
My mom recently had to have a pacemaker placed.
My bonus son just graduated high school and is getting ready to leave for Navy boot camp this week.
And somehow, all of it is happening at once.
And somewhere inside all of that… life just keeps moving.
Because it always does.
The Chaos Is Real
This is the part I think people don’t always see.
When I talk about choosing myself, grounding, protecting my peace—it’s easy to picture quiet mornings, calm schedules, everything finally falling into place.
That’s not my reality.
My reality is responsibility.
Pressure.
People who need me.
Decisions that don’t wait.
Emotions that hit when I don’t have time for them.
This isn’t a peaceful season.
This is a full, demanding, emotionally layered, nonstop season.
And yet…
I Haven’t Neglected Myself
That’s the shift.
In the past, a season like this would’ve completely swallowed me.
I would’ve disappeared into it.
I would’ve told myself:
“Just get through it.”
“You don’t have time to slow down.”
“You can take care of yourself later.”
But “later” is where I used to lose myself.
And I’m not doing that anymore.
Even in the busiest, heaviest, most chaotic stretch—I haven’t abandoned me.
Grounding Isn’t Optional Anymore—It’s Critical
Those small things I talked about before?
They aren’t just nice ideas anymore.
They’re non-negotiable.
Because this level of life… this level of demand…
without grounding—it will take everything out of you.
So I still sit.
I still breathe.
I still find my quiet—whether it’s on my porch, in my jeep, or in a few minutes no one else even notices.
Because grounding isn’t about having time.
It’s about choosing to stay steady when everything around you isn’t.
I Showed Up for Myself… Even Here
I think that’s what I’m most proud of right now.
Not that life is easier.
Not that things are calm.
Not that I have it all figured out.
But that I didn’t disappear.
I didn’t stop showing up for myself just because life got loud again.
I kept choosing:
- A breath before reacting
- A moment before responding
- A boundary when I needed it
- Stillness in the middle of movement
And it’s changing everything.
This Is What Strength Looks Like Now
For a long time, I thought strength looked like pushing through anything.
Holding it all together.
Being everything for everyone.
Never slowing down.
Now?
Strength looks like:
- Choosing myself—even when everything else is demanding me
- Protecting my energy—even when I feel pulled in every direction
- Allowing myself to feel it all—but not lose myself inside it
This version of strength is quieter.
But it’s stronger.
I Can Hold It All—and Still Be Okay
There’s still grief here.
There’s still pressure.
There’s still emotion layered into every part of life.
Alex is still with me.
Mike is still with me.
That doesn’t go away.
But now… I’m grounded inside it.
I’m not waiting for life to slow down to feel okay.
I’m learning how to be okay within it.
Your Turn
So let me ask you something real:
What does your life look like right now?
Is it calm? Or does it feel like everything is happening at once?
And in the middle of that… are you still showing up for yourself?
Not perfectly. Not all day. Just… at all?
Because if there’s one thing I’m learning—it’s this:
You don’t wait for chaos to pass before you choose yourself.
You choose yourself inside it.
That’s where the real shift happens.
